Kildare shopping village, just a short drive from Dublin is part of the growing portfolio of global shopping venues under the luxury ‘Value Retail’ umbrella, it currently has around a dozen villages located in key locations across Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Its recent 50m € expansion in Kildare was completed at the end of 2015 and has attracted many high-end brands, not only bringing shoppers from the surrounding counties but from around the world.
The shopping village has a unique character and charm that sets it apart from other retail developments. Designed to look like a quaint village, this development is not what we have come to expect from out of town developments. There is a distinct absence of contemporary materials and a deliberate desire to get away from uniformity with every adjoining structure seeming to have its own unique touches. Bangor Blue slates were chosen as a roofing material for large sections of the development. They were a perfect fit for the luxury feel of the venue, combining the charm and beauty of natural materials with outstanding quality, performance, and longevity.

Approximately 60k Bangor Blue slates were supplied by LBS for use in this phase of construction, with an additional 60k Spanish slates also being used. The original phase also used Bangor Blue slates and it was key that the old and new sections tied in together as closely as possible.
Quality speaks volumes. Tried and tested, the Bangor Blue slate is one product that has the enviable advantage of being able to prove its pedigree. Just look at the roofs around any major town in Ireland and you will see Bangor Blue slates doing their job. They are virtually impermeable to water, they are unreactive to atmospheric impurities and they contain no damaging minerals. Once fitted they are maintenance free.
It would be easy to argue that the outlay for Bangor Blue slate is more than for many alternative materials, especially when it comes to large public sector or commercial developments. However, consider the 100+ lifespan of the slate over the lifespan of the building. Factor in the residual cost of the slate when it is eventually removed. Factor in the environmental benefits of locally sourced traditional materials and the benefits soon start to far outweigh the negatives.
