Although there are slate deposits across the United States, the main hub of slate activity is in a place known as Slate Valley.  Slate Valley is located in up-state New York / Vermont, and is approximately 24 miles long and 6 miles wide.  The slate quarries in this region were first discovered in the mid-1800s by Welsh immigrants, and are worked until the present day.

The slate deposits in this region are of an unusually high quality and they have a unique range of different colours including green, grey, black, purple and red.  There tends to be a large variance in colour shading in American slate, with their local domestic markets preferring weathering and mottled colours.
