Spanish Slate
Spain is the world's largest producer of natural roofing slate, with over 75% of global production. Spanish roofing slate is from the Ordovician period (550 million years ago) and is concentrated along the North West area of the Iberian Peninsula. It has been commercially extracted since the 1800s.
Spanish slates started to make their way into the Irish market in the 1980s and many prestigious buildings in Ireland, the UK and mainland Europe have been roofed in quality slates from Galicia and Leon.
