The slate in the Ffestiniog quarry is extracted using a mining process, as opposed to the open-cast method used in the other Welsh//Slate quarries. It is regarded as the finest quality blue grey roofing slate in the world.

Ffestiniog slates are generally expected to outlive the life of a building (when fixed in accordance with BS 5534 and BS 8000), and are covered by a 100 year quarry backed guarantee.
