Ffestiniog
The Blaenau Ffestiniog quarry is part of the Welsh // Slate Group, which owns the 3 main quarries in North Wales. Located in the mountains of Snowdonia, the Ffestiniog quarry first opened around 1760 and the present-day operation has remained largely unchanged throughout the centuries. It is an attractive blue gray slate with a riven texture and is available in standard sizes of 500×300mm, 500×250mm and 400×250mm and in 3 grades: Capital Grade (nominal 6mm thickness), County Grade (nominal 8mm thickness) and Celtic Grade (nominal 10mm thickness).
The slate in the Ffestiniog quarry is extracted using a mining process, as opposed to the open-cast method used in the other Welsh//Slate quarries. It is regarded as the finest quality blue grey roofing slate in the world. Ffestiniog slates are generally expected to outlive the life of a building (when fixed in accordance with BS 5534 and BS 8000), and are covered by a 100 year quarry backed guarantee. |
