Re-Roofing (with Pictures) St Brendan’s Church

Designed in 1855 by the architect JJ McCarthy, St Brendan’s Catholic Church & Presbytery is a fine example of early English Gothic Revival style architecture in Ireland. LBS have recently supplied this magnificent church with around 14,000 500x300mm Bangor Blue Celtic slates to replace the original Bangor Blue slates fitted in 1855. Having also supplied Blue Bangor slates to Kilmoyley church in Ardfert, the parish had no qualms in sourcing their slates from LBS once again. It was important to all concerned, that the roof retained its original character and appeal, given the historic significance of both the building, and the town of Ardfert.

For those who are not familiar -JJ McCarthy was a prolific Irish architect of the Victorian era who designed many of our landmark church buildings (St Patrick’s Cathedral Armagh, All Hallows College Dublin, to name but a few). He became a student at the Dublin School of Architecture in 1834. His first recorded independent commission being for St Columb’s Catholic Church in Derry in 1838, although he himself did not become well known in Ireland until the 1850s.

Having established a practice in Dublin, JJ McCarthy became a regular contributor of architectural articles to the Irish Catholic magazine. Having established himself as a leading authority in his field he became a founding member of the Irish Ecclesiological Society. As the only architect in this group he held a powerful position and became one of, if not, the leading church architect of the mid Victorian era in Ireland designing over 100 buildings*.

In 1857 he accepted a position as Professor of Architecture at the Catholic University of Ireland, in addition to already being Professor of Ecclesiastical Architecture at All Hallows Missionary college Dublin. He continued to make a significant contribution to Irish architecture until his death in 1882.
