LBS Customer Trip May 2014

Earlier this month LBS brought some customers across to our Penryhn Quarry in North Wales for a two day overview of the Bangor Blue Slate and the Welsh slate industry. Accompanying us on the trip were roofing contractors Paul Cash and Hugh Ross (Paul Cash Roofing Ltd), Andrew Parke (Andrew Parke Roofing), and Arthur and John Traynor (John Traynor Roofing).

LBSCustomerTripMay20141We left Belfast on the 0800 flight to Liverpool and then drove the ninety minute journey to the Penrhyn slate quarry home of the Bangor Blue Slate. We were given a welcome and presentation of the quarry by Managing Director, Chris Allwood and then went on a tour of the Penrhyn quarry face
where Bangor Blue Slate is extracted and then onto the factory where Bangor Blues are still traditionally hand finished.

The guys got to see first-hand how these famous slates are made, and were surprised that it is still very much a manual process, with the
finished Bangor Blue Slates still traditionally split by hand.

After a hard days ‘graft’ we then brought the guys to the newly opened zipwire in the Penrhyn quarry, which is actually the longest zipwire in the Northern hemisphere. The zip wire is travels over 2km suspended above the old southern pit of the quarry which has been dis-used since 1989, reaching speeds in excess of 100mph. Definitely not for the faint hearted! Check out our short video below of our customers on the ZipWire – no customers were harmed in the making of this video!

Keen to put the scale of the quarry industry in Wales into context, Day 2 took in a trip to the National Slate Museum on the site of the old Dinorwig quarry face. In its day, Dinorwig quarry was
a major player in the Welsh slate industry but finally closed in 1969. It is now the site of the National Slate Museum and tells the story of the Welsh slate industry and showcases the tools and workshops of latter day Welsh slate miners. We would love to hear if someone in your family worked in the slate industry, or has a story about the famous Bangor Blue Slate. Please feel free to comment below, or for more information on the history of the world’s most durable roofing slate click here.
